HISTORY OF POOLE PARK LADIES ONLY 5KM RACE

In January 1998 one of our members, Val Cameron, died at the age of 56, from ovarian cancer.  Her widower, Bruce, mentioned how Ovacome, the ovarian cancer charity had helped him and Val through her illness.  The club committee decided to organise a 5-kilometre ladies’ only race in her memory and to donate the proceeds to Ovacome.
The first race was held in May 1998 and attracting 145 runners, followed by another in the September.  It has been held in April and September every year since.  Bruce rides the lead bike and presents a special prize to the first Over 50 lady.

The race in April 2003 had a record number of entries of 355.  That year we introduced onto the entry form the provision for optional donations to Ovacome.  Although individual donations are not large they do mount up and to the end of 2007 donations have totalled to over £ 5,200 and with proceeds since the race began of over £4,400, a total of over £9,600 has been given to Ovacome.

We are fortunate to have the support of LUSH Ltd, who contribute towards the prizes and also give a memento to all finishers, and Running Free, who contribute towards the spot prizes.

In the April 2003 race, one of the races regular competitors, Joan Royal of Dorset Dodlers, set a new British record of 21.38 for the O/65 category, as well as winning the special O/50 prize.
