Road Race Wimborne 10

The Wimborne 10 is the next race in the Dorset Road Race League. If anyone has a spare entry or is dropping out and wants to donate it to a good cause, please take it to the club on Wednesday and hand to Dave Hayes. We have a potential scorer who is in search of a number.

First to say: That was the coolest thing I've ever done!!!

Quite surprised that Gete Wami hasn't done it. Jaja, the germans... (Ok, with russian roots) Did you realise that the russians getting quite strong in the last years?

Did anybody of you smell Gas alongside the route? (No, it wasn't me!) Therefore they redirected the womans leaders and they had to run further than normal.

Bit disappointed about this Massai warrior who dropped out. Are weapons actually allowed in a Marathon??? There must be some Health & Safety-Regulations for this! No bananas, but lion-killing warriors in the race. God, during the last 10 Miles I was desperate to spot a banana. (At Marathon Goerlitz they shout at the drinks stations what choice they've got to offer!)

The coolest thing was the priest on the left side, standing in front of his Church giving us his blessing. And definitely running over the Tower Bridge with my arms raised.

I've had no response from the Juniors so it's time to have an open competition.

i have a good one in germany for all they like mountains...its the biggest cross country race in europ. its about HM marathon and supermarathon 72km. so if someone i interestettell me its on the 17th of may.

yes i realy miss them all al lot. its horrible to find a good trainer in germany. i still not on this trainingslevel i could be its a shame...but thats germay if you arent on the realy top you have not realy a chance to get there...and its not the same in the team is more youself and not all together...but anyway i still running and i belive in my dreams:)

Your German is on holiday in the Swabian (Southern Germany) enjoying proper food like "Kaesspaetzle" (self-made Pasta mixed with cheese), "Laugenbroetchen" (salty bread-rolls), "Gluehwein" (mulled wine) and of course "Hefeweizen" (wheat-beer). It's quite funny when Germans starting to speak english with me!

I hope you all survived that dreadful + busy day. (Salisbury / Studland / Great South / Stickler) I've been completely soaked. Bad day to try the new long sleeve! Missed my target by 3:14 min; anyway glad to finish it.

See you hopefully on the 14th!

What you need to do is choose the charity you want to raise money for, this will be based on 2 things, 1, your own charitable preference and 2, how much they expect you to commit to.

You shouldnt have a problem finding a "golden bond" place, here are some suggestions.

Being fairly new to this lark, I didn't know when the cut off date for entries to the London Marathon was and a friend drunkenly challenged me to do it (and I accepted)- while I challenged him to get off his arse and get fit!

Threfore, I'm trying to get a place via a charity The Cystic Fibrosis Trust but the sponsorship is £2000 min. The problem is if I start raising money now and I don't get a place - of course it will be great to raise the money but I would feel that I have cheated my sponsors. I am kind of in limbo.

I'm sure I could do it even if I had to walk around! Has anyone any advice?

Getting to grips with The Grizzly

EARLIER this year I ran the 26.2-miles of the London Marathon on a sweltering hot day in just under three-and-a-half hours.
Today, I waddled across the finish line of The Grizzly on Devon's south coast having taken just under three-and-three-quarter hours to run a measly 19.7-miles. Guess which one was harder?
The title of this year's torture was Armageddon Now Here, which was an appropriate sub-text for what numbing hardship lay ahead.
The race should have been staged last March. However the beaching of the ship Napoli off Branscombe Beach and the tide of scavangers who descended on Devon to get their hands on the containers which had landed on the shingle forced organisers to postpone it.
So Armageddon was delayed for six months. Instead of a windswept and damp March day, the town of Seaton was bathed in sunshine for the start. Fortunately, the skies clouded over later in the morning, but conditions were still humid.
I was feeling decidedly worried about this race. I'd left the trail shoes in the car and gone for lighter road shoes. It was a gamble, and fortunately was the right one.
The Test Way Relay the day before had left the trusted legs feeling weary, my body ached, and I began the run apprehensively; the distance, the thought of injury and whether I would make it to the finish lurked at the back of my mind.
The race itself was a veritable pot pourri of running. We began the race on the Esplanade in Seaton and set off for a tough half-mile stretch along the shingle, looping round to the start line and then off out of Seaton up the first hill.
It was a stiff opening climb up towards the cliff top and that set the template for the toughest of races as the field of almost 1,000 runners set out on a trail through the pretty countryside.
A week ago in Glasgow, the atmosphere for a big city half marathon had been characterless and charmless. Here in the rural west country, there was a fantastic feelgood factor to the race.
Musicians including a bagpiper, folk musicians, drummers and even a fella playing a didgeredoo, lined the route along with small knots of enthusiastic spectators handing out sweets and drinks. The marshals were cheery and smiling, and it was this double combination which helped mask the pain of the race.
The scenery was stunning and spectacular. The shell of the Napoli lay off the coast as we ran up and down the clifftops, down steep grassy paths and up windy, hamstring-hurting climbs.
Soon, it was a case of having to walk up the hills, conserving energy and then setting off again close to the peak.
If that was the appetiser, then the main course was tough to stomach. The musical strains of a bagpiper heralded the first of the bogs almost knee deep in glutonous mud.
More were to follow. We crossed streams, pulled our way up one grassy hill which was close to vertical as could be. It was hard and relentless and the pace was inevitably slow.
The miles ticked by slowly, it was a case of surviving. Conserving energy on the uphills and pushing on with the downhills.
Ten-eleven-twelve and thirteen miles passed. Soon the calves became cramping, the hamstring tightening. Runners around me were hurting too, stopping on the paths, tried to rid their legs of the aches.
The Grizzly takes no prisoners and accepts no passengers.
Fourteen-fifteen-sixteen and seventeen miles followed as the course headed up hill and down dale through the villages of Bramscombe and Beer. The crowds continued to be enthusiastic. I bagged a handful of jelly babies and Bassett's All Sorts as we trekked across Branscombe Beach before stepping up the infamous Stairway over the final cliff looking down to Seaton.
I couldn't wait for the finish. I looked at my watch. I had been running longer than the London Marathon and seven miles shorter. The final assault was one last short beach run to the finish at Seaton Esplanade.
Never has a finish been so warmly received. Never have I felt so knackered.
Firemen from the Dorset Fire Brigade were there to hose down our mud-strewn shoes and legs with seawater, and there was a seawater shower for good measure.
It was hard, it was tough, but boy did I feel a huge sense of achievement

This sounds like the place for ideas.

Any way to get the kids doing the Minithons is to be encouraged. We were down on numbers this year. Poole Council could send out info packs with the Minithon entry forms. We'd ask for the schools to hold T shirt design competitions and the best from each school sent to us for judging.

Then the individual and the school will be represented.

I'll bring it up at the next FOR meeting on 1st Oct.

Why dont we ask the schools to hold a drawing competition for the Poole 10k, with the best one being printed on the t-shirts and the winner starting the race? Gets the event out to them kids!

Paris is a great Spring time marathon, and you can join in the training with anyone doing London then have the satisfaction of having done your marathon when watching others in London. Transport and accomodation is easy, and the marathon takes a good route with lots of support.

So what marathons are Poole Runners running in the Spring season. Personally I have put in for the London, but doubt if I will get in and if I do I may well defer it to 2009. I am probably going to do the Edinburgh on the 25 May (bank Holiday).

Train to Southampton, flight to Edinburgh, kip in Hostel, run, get lashed, flight train back. Sorted.

Someone or something has deleted Alwyns last post, in it he stated that he wanted his prize for winning the Bournemouth Bay run and he would lay down naked in front of the start line of every Poole Runners Race, starting with the ladies 5k on Tuesday, until he got it. I would like to take this opportunity to quash any rumours that :

a) I was livid at missing out on the trouphies

b) I boycotted the beer afterwards

I was a little upset that no prizes were given out to 2nd senior male and/or 4th place, especially as I had never triamphed so highly in a race before, and worked up a bit of a sweet to get there. Livid is a bit STRONG .

I was hoping to highlight to my good lady wife that although me running was taking up a large part of our free time together, it may well be starting to pay off with a little trophyware !

More importantly I have never oppted out on BEER in my life - I was there at the HALFWAY HOUSE as stated after Prize Giving (or NO PRIZE GIVING as it should be called). Only to find MR & Mrs Daish about to leave after there food and no sign of any other POOLE RUNNERS. I was left to drown my sorrows/celebrate my triamph on my own.

As I'm running London next year and it's almost impossible to run it without someone trying to donate money I have decided on my cause for next year and through a combination of events worthy of paying for and dodgy merchandise have decided to raise money for a school in Zimbabwe, which will be carefully selected by our own Zimbabwean. My intention is to buy goods and not donate money since in the current climate it's not worth much there at present.

My first plan is to put together a carefully and delicately assembled black and white calendar of Poole Runners performing athletic feats in limited clothing but artistically hiding their equipment so to speak. I would like you to list your interest on this forum and I will get back to you in the future with the dates of any photo shoots. I know of a photographer who I might be able to persuade to help with the photo shoot, but if anyone knows of another desperate to get involved that would be great. So follow this email with your name (not someone else's) and I'll try to accomodate you in 2008.

Isle of Wight Halfmarathon

For everybody who wants to do this one in the future here my race report.

I started 06:40 am in Bournemouth and arrived comfortable at 07:45 am in Southsea. (Yes, I found it without my grandfathers maps!) The ferries in Portsmouth same as the race office on IoW are well signposted so there is no excuse you couldn't find it. Luckily avoided paying for parking.

With the help of two lovely blond ladies I found the cheapest fare to go there. (Wightlink Rail Rover Ticket, 14 Quid) After large amounts of coffee and studying the papers I was the first on the Late Entries. One hour later could easily have done it but I hate it to be late!

The route was quite undulating with a lot of traffic on that day. (I wouldn't call it hilly) It's comparable to the Swanage HM but not that flat at the end. We enjoyed a few nice views to the main land. Can't tell you really something about the race as I was in a hurry.

I finished in a reasonable time of 1:45:51 h. Of course, could have been better. Always struggling at Mile 9. (Started to think about Salami breadrolls)

All in all nice day trip; nothing really for a two weeks holiday.

Swimming might be a bad idea as I tried to swim from one groyne to the next one in the summer...

Ferry leaves Southsea 8.45; Race starts 11 so that should be suitable. Of course, the venue is not the easiest but for me its a good occasion to have a look down there and no Poole Runner has done it last year.

You do like to pick the hardest venues to go to dont you. If your driving there, its going to cost you a small fortune in ferry fares to go over and back. Have you booked the ferry yet? The other option you have is to goto Portsmouth and then get the hovercraft over to Ryde and then train down into Sanddown, the start is only 3 minutes walk apparently.

Seeing as Im nice here is a possible itinery for you.

Hovercraft from Portsmouth to ryde every 30 minutes on the Half Hour, back on the quarter hour.

Sandown station is three minutes walk from the venue and is served by a frequent train service from Ryde pier. The train connects with each Portsmouth to Ryde Wightlink Catamaran, half hourly service departs Portsmouth 20 minutes past and 10 minutes to the hour.

And for the future I'd like to keep this thread for sharing lifts. You'll arrive more relaxed at a race if you don't need to be bothered about driving (better PBs!) and you're saving the planet at the same time. ;-)

The guy doing the Swanage 1/2 is Ian Woolston, a good friend of mine and work mate.He works late on Wednesdays but does turn up to track sessions and most of the local races.Being a new boy its hard to be recognised if your not at the club runs.

I believe he was Poole Runners only entrant to the Swanage 1/2 this year I might be wrong tho.

"Who the Hell?"

Being new to the club, I sometimes see pictures in obscure places showing runners wearing our famous vest. These people are not the normal suspects from Wednesday nights who I would recognise and I dont get down to the Junior nights. So I thought I would capture these loose cannons and post them on our Photo's page. If you recognise them, tell us who they are and spread thier Glory for the rest of us to ooooh and ahhhhh at.

Have you seen a roaming Poole runner?, post it direct in the photo's (which is the better option) or send it to me, we will get to the bottom of it!

Lost Passwords

Some people have mentioned they have lost thier passwords (how do you people survive!)

You can reset your passwords by going into membership and enter your usernames in the box provided, you will also have to enter your secret question. The Website will send out a new password and you can then login and click on "My Details" to set it to something you CAN remember!

I must apologies for not getting the Juniors area more upto date, I will get on it as soon as I can, in the mean time, they meet as follows: (if you need any more info let me knwo and Ill get one of the Junior coaches to contact you)

Saturdays from 9.30am to 11am at Lockyers School, Corfe Mullen. The club’s advanced group of about 35 meet at this time and do their sessions, assisted by the club's squad of eleven junior coaches working in pairs (and a three).

Saturdays from 10.45am to 12noon at Lockyers School, Corfe Mullen. This is the clubs's developmental group and under 11's main training time. Everyone meets and warms up together and then splits into event groups, or games etc. The advanced group warm down with the developmental group and them some stay and assist the coaches and act as mentors.

Tuesdays from 6.45pm to 8.00pm meet at Corfe Mullen Recreation Ground (April to Mid September) and Broadstone Sports Centre (mid September to Mid April). This is a speed-endurance session for over 11s and can be quite hard work. Highly recommended for those who wish to improve.

Wednesdays between 7pm and 8pm from Broadstone Leisure Centre only suitable for older juniors able to run 6 - 10 miles. Only recommended for 14 or 15 year olds.

Thursdays between 6.45pm and 8.00pm at Ashdown Track. Meet at 6.45pm or so to warm up. We use the track between 7pm and 8pm for sprinting, middle distance and high jump. Once a month pole vault training with specialist coach.

Sundays occasional hurdling sessions at Ashdown Sports Centre. Also available for those in the under 17's who want to train at that time.

If, however, you want to get back into some running, you are definately in the right place

Please feel free to ask any questions you want. We have runners of all abilities in the club with a whole range of experiences, if you would like to come along and have a jog you are more than welcome, we meet at Broadstone leisure centre on Wednesday evenings around 7pm, just come upstairs and say "Hello Im new" and you will be shown around by one of our non scarey types. If you just want to loiter on these pages, thats ok too.

Hi people

I hope you don't mind me gate crashing!

I've spent the last few months doing an open university course. I've just finished my exam :-) and I want to get back into running again. I'm not, I must admit, a seasoned runner but over the last 8 months I've managed to fit a a 4.5, 5 and 10k in plus sporadic runs in the evening.

I'm on some antibiotics at the moment so hope to ease myself back in gradually. Have I come to the right place?!!!

Following complaints by Geoff Robberts that my hair looked better long than it does short I have decided that this forum site is the perfect opportunity to obtain sarcastic feedback. If you go to the archive pictures page you will see me sat with my good pal Chris (aaaawwwwiiiitttteeee) Akabusi. This I believe is one of very few pictures to show me with even remotely long hair. Have a look and decide whether it looked better like that, or as it is now? You the public decide!

Hello everyone in Poole Runners Cyber land!

Just to keep you updated on what is happening. Im going to see the committee on Monday to talk about the web site and how it will all work. This web site is really in its infancy and was only posted as a demonstration of what could be achieved, but I have had some great remarks and thank you.

The web site is based on a framework that is used by a number of club web sites around the globe, and we are all working to try and improve features and stability. The next version is out in July / August and when I have that code, I hope to relaunch that code as the final Poole Runners web site, if the committee want it. This will mean that we will start afresh, using the lessons learned here. It also means that you wont have a Webmaster you will have a web GOD with lots of little web masters all keeping the web site upto date and relevent. How poor Denise managed, I just dont know and she did a fantastic job but it is simply too much work for one person. So a large amount of work will go into making the website easy to keep updated by key people, whoever that may be!

What I need, is for you to tell me what you want too see, for example, I thought a spotlight section where we can interview some characters in the club, no matter what the running ability is. In doing this I hope to show potential new comers that we are a friendly, social and welcoming club and I know we are, you were with me, so give me some ideas.

There are a few bugs and this site is a work in progress. I want to change the photo's so any poole runner can upload photo's instead of just administrators, and have included that in my "to do list". In the mean time, you can e-mail me your photo's and I will upload them for you. E-mail address in the membership area.
